Amidst an onslaught of superhero movies in recent years, Peter Berg's Hancock may have pointed the way for a new wave of "antisuperhero" movies. This subversive action comedy stars Will Smith as the titular superhero whom nobody likes, having caused as much harm as help to the populace. But moviegoers love Hancock regardless, as the film grossed more than US$600 million in box-office worldwide.

Based on an original script rather than a comic book, the film depicts Hancock (Smith) as a depressed, drunken dude who possesses great power but not-so-great responsibility. The people begin to turn against him, until a PR executive (Jason Bateman of TV's Arrested Development) whose life he saved teaches him to mend his image. Complications ensue when Hancock falls in love with his new friend's wife, played by Academy Award-winner Charlize Theron.
