  • Musekinin Hero (Jacket C)(Normal Edition)(Japan Version)
    Kanjani8 Style
November 24, 2008 Picked By Sanwei See all this editor's picks
Oddball idols Kanjani8 are perhaps best known for their ability to talk and laugh up a storm, but this time I want to give due credit to their music. Though definitely the most "un-Johnny's" of the Johnny's groups and populated by members more suited for manzai than idol pop, Kanjani8 has achieved, in seemingly the most casual of manners, something that eludes most of Johnny's other groups - a distinctive musical style. As every Johnny's single is pretty much ripe to be covered countless times on Shonen Club, all the songs from all the groups begin to blend together after a while, which is of course all the better for those Johnny's Jr theme medleys. There is a certain sound and style... [read more]
  • Cape No. 7 Original Soundtrack (OST)
    Music in the Mail
October 30, 2008 Picked By Sanwei See all this editor's picks
Just how exactly did Cape No. 7 become Taiwan's highest-grossing Chinese-language film ever? By now, the fairy-tale run of this little film about a ragtag band in a small coastal town has become the stuff of legends. Cape No. 7 opened rather humbly in fourth place in Taiwan on August 22, 2008. Carried by word of mouth, it rose to the top spot in the following weeks, breaking record after record as it surpassed the box office of Lust, Caution, Red Cliff, The Dark Knight, and finally Jurassic Park to become the third highest-grossing film ever in Taiwan. Made on an NT50 million (US$1.5 million) budget, Cape No. 7 eventually pulled in over NT400 million (US$12 million). Given the film's... [read more]
  • Flaming Brothers (DVD) (Remastered) (Hong Kong Version)
    Brotherhood above all
November 7, 2008 Picked By dian See all this editor's picks
After A Better Tomorrow opened the floodgate to triad hero movies in 1986, Chow Yun Fat went on to star in numerous similarly styled movies, and Flaming Brothers was one of the more remarkable works that would make even John Woo proud. In fact, this flick evokes many gangster symbols made popular by the genre maestro: trench coat-donning, shades-wearing mobsters glorified with a strict code of honor, gun in each hand downing enemies without breaking a sweat, their ever-slick hairdo never getting messy in the process. Flaming Brothers is made in the grand tradition of heroic bloodshed movies. Director Joe Cheung obviously understood the material well enough to do a decent job. The story... [read more]
  • Journey To The Center Of The Earth (2008) (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)
    Entertaining to the core
November 21, 2008 Picked By dian See all this editor's picks
Stripped of the 3D gimmicks that helped make it one of the most successful movies (boxoffice-wise) of summer 2008, Journey to the Center of the Earth inevitably has to endure harsher scrutiny as it becomes available on video. But let's go easy on the folks who made the flick. They knew what they could and could not do, and obviously, they didn't want to present too much challenge for themselves or the audience. The bottom line: it's a kiddie popcorn movie that works on an amusement park ride level, and it's always intended that way. With that in mind, one could find the movie easier to enjoy. The filmmakers wisely chose not to do a direct adaptation of Jules Verne's science fiction classic... [read more]
  • Kung Fu Panda (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)
Discover "The Way of the Panda"
November 27, 2008 Picked By Ceriseno See all this editor's picks
Several months ago, my family and I went to watch Kung Fu Panda with low expectations, but in the end we couldn't have been happier about the decision because it turned out to be a dazzling martial arts surprise filled with loads of humor. As a life-long fan of Bruce Lee, the legendary king of kung fu himself, I was a bit turned off by the idea of Kung Fu Panda at first, because it just didn't sound appealing enough to me. My adored icon, as everybody knows, is remembered as a perfectly trained living weapon, swift as lightning and agile as a cat and with the right physical appearance to match, whereas this tale's protagonist, Po, is anything but. If anything, he is just a very clumsy,... [read more]
  • The Magic Hour (DVD) (Special Edition) (English Subtitled) (Japan Version)
    Three laughs a minute
November 27, 2008 Picked By Sanwei See all this editor's picks
From the delightful mind of Mitani Koki comes the clever and crowd-pleasing comedy The Magic Hour which had the entire theater up in stitches when I saw it during the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival. I can't remember the last time I had that much fun at the movies. Though more ambitious, over-the-top, and narrative-driven than Mitani's previous slice-of-life Suite Dreams, The Magic Hour starts from a similar foundation. Again, he places eccentric characters in a limited space and lets them roam free on the set, crossing paths and lighting fires through comical coincidences, quirky set pieces, and smile-tugging dialogue - but this time a hotel just isn't enough. Mitani built his own quaint... [read more]

Short of stature, with a permanently cheeky expression etched on his face and a rasping voice that sounds like he has smoked one cigarette too many, it's fair to say that Eric Tsang is nobody's idea of a traditional leading man. Yet in spite of, or perhaps even because of this, a career spanning more than thirty years and more than one hundred and fifty films has seen him become one of the most popular and beloved performers in the Hong Kong entertainment industry. As well as for his near constant presence on the silver screen, the actor is also well known for his outspoken views and often-outrageous ways as a television host and comic. However, behind the laughter and the bumbling onscreen... [read more]
