The classic Chinese story collection Strange Tales of Liaozhai receives its most opulent adaptation yet with Painted Skin. A remake of King Hu's 1993 film of the same title, this Gordon Chan-directed release mixes old-style Hong Kong Cinema panache with new generation stars and visual effects, resulting in an unexpected and wildly entertaining mixture of action, drama and tragic romance. Top Chinese actresses Zhou Xun and Vicki Zhao face off as two women who love the same man, a soldier played by the handsome Aloys Chen. Donnie Yen lends the film a solid martial arts presence, while Betty Sun (Fearless) and Singapore actor Qi Yu Wu (881) fill out the supporting roles. A box office hit in both China and Hong Kong, Painted Skin is Hong Kong's official entry into the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 2009 Academy Awards.

Zhou Xun stars as Xiaowei, a beautiful maiden rescued from the clutches of bandits by honorable soldier Wang Sheng (Aloys Chen). Alone and without family, Xiaowei is taken into Wang Sheng's home, where she becomes popular with Wang Sheng's fellow soldiers, and friends with his lovely wife Peirong (Vicki Zhao). However, a romantic tension exists between the three, and though Wang Sheng is faithful to Peirong, he can't help but be attracted to the alluring Xiaowei. The situation is further complicated when Peirong's old flame, martial arts expert Yong (Donnie Yen) appears, along with a demonic serial killer (Qi Yu Wu) who steals human hearts. While Wang Sheng and his men hunt down the killer, Peirong tells Yong that she believes that the killer is not working alone. She suspects that the killer is delivering the hearts to a demon who consumes them to stay immortal, and that the demon is hiding within their midst in the skin of the beautiful Xiaowei...

  • The Magic Hour (DVD) (Special Edition) (English Subtitled) (Japan Version) DVD Region 2 Sato Koichi | Tsumabuki Satoshi | Fukatsu Eri | Nishida Toshiyuki
Applying the same formula that made Suite Dreams a critical and commercial success, director Mitani Koki rounds up an all-star cast and even constructs his own town for his hilarious fourth film The Magic Hour. Unable to find a real location that matched his imagination, Mitani built from scratch the nostalgic fictional port town of Sucago, complete with main street and pier, once again enlisting the services of production designer Taneda Yohei, who created the lavish hotel in Suite Dreams and has worked on films like Swallowtail and Kill Bill. One could say that the set is the true star of the film, if not for the star-studded ensemble cast of Tsumabuki Satoshi (Nada Sou Sou), Sato Koichi (Sukiyaki Western - Django), Ayase Haruka (Cyborg She), Fukatsu Eri (Bayside Shakedown), and veteran actor Nishida Toshiyuki (Sukiyaki Western - Django) as the town's mob boss. Like Suite Dreams, The Magic Hour weaves idiosyncratic people and stories together in amusing and unexpected manners, charming audiences with a delightful scramble of jaunty nostalgia, yakuza gunfights, and sitcom suspense.

In deep waters for stealing the boss's girlfriend (Fukatsu Eri), nightclub manager Bingo (Tsumabuki Satoshi) has been ordered to find legendary hitman Della Togashi, or face a very painful death. With time running out, Bingo desperately hires failed stunt actor Murata Taiki (Sato Koichi) to pose as the hitman. Strolling casually into town for his big break, Murata thinks he's shooting a gangster movie, but he's actually walked into a gang war.

  • Connected (DVD) (Hong Kong Version) DVD Region All Louis Koo (Actor) | Barbie Hsu (Actor) | Benny Chan (Director) | Nick Cheung (Actor)
It's Hong Kong's turn to borrow from Hollywood. Director Benny Chan (Invisible Target) adapts the 2004 Hollywood film Cellular for Asian audiences with Connected, an entertaining and suspenseful thrill ride that proved popular with audiences during its 2008 theatrical release. Hong Kong's Louis Koo (Rob-B-Hood) stars as the everyman hero played in the Hollywood version by Chris Evans, and the filmmakers have added a romantic subplot by casting Taiwan's Barbie Xu (Meteor Garden) in the role originated by the older Kim Basinger. As the film's black-clad villain, Mainland actor Liu Ye (Blood Brothers) exudes over-the-top, entertaining menace. Rounding out the cast are Nick Cheung (Exiled) as a stalwart traffic cop, with Louis Fan (The Moss), Eddie Cheung (Election), TVB actor Wong Cho Lam and model Ankie Beilke in key supporting roles.

All it takes is one phone call to save a life. Kidnapped by a group of threatening men led by a mysterious mastermind (Liu Ye), engineer Grace Wong (Barbie Xu) is locked in a tool shed with a broken analog phone, which she repairs just enough to make an outgoing phone call. She's able to make a connection with a mobile phone belonging to Bob (Louis Koo), a harried debt collector who's hurrying to the airport to see off his estranged son. Bob is skeptical of Grace's plea for help, and a passing traffic cop (Nick Cheung) dismisses the call as a prank. But something in Bob's instincts tells him that she's speaking the truth, and he rushes to find Grace's young daughter, only to witness her being kidnapped by the unknown villains. Soon Bob is embroiled in a pulse-pounding race against all odds, with time running out and his mobile phone's battery running down. Can this irresponsible divorced father with a dead-end future become a hero and save the lives of those who depend on him?
